“LOS REYES DEL PERREO”

Puerto Rican reggaetón duo Alexis y Fido are ushering in the Year of the Dog — well, the Year of the Pitbulls, to be precise. The pair behind last year’s club banger “Eso Ehhh” — which remained on the top ten slot in Billboard’s Hot Latin Singles chart for over eight weeks — is poised to release Los Reyes del Perreo, a collection of greatest hits packed with five brand new cuts. And when audiences get a glimpse of the duo’s extensive pedigree and their history of devouring beats with their clever, picaresque rhymes, enthusiastic chants, and signature barking sounds, they will surely come out with an even deeper appreciation for these doggies’ styles.

Last year, with the release of their debut, Los Pitbulls, Cayey-bred friends Raul “Alexis” Ortiz and Joel “Fido” Martinez debuted on three Billboard charts: Top Heatseekers (No.2), Latin Rhythm Albums (No.2) and Top Latin Albums (No.4) advising the world of the artists’ bright future. This year, after selling over 200,000 copies of the album, all eyes are on Alexis y Fido and the four-year-old duo is ready to bring in the heat.

Los Reyes del Perreo will include ten of the duo’s biggest hits, including “El Palo” (first featured in 2003’s various artists album El Band 2 Korrupto), “Tócale Bocina” (from producer Noriega’s Contra La Corriente album), “El Rolo” (included in the compilation La Misión IV), “Gata Michu Michu” (from Hector El Father’s top-selling Hector El Bambino Presenta Los Anormales), and their crossover smash single “El Tiburón” (featured on Luny Tunes’ 2005 compilation Más Flow 2).

For Alexis y Fido, Los Reyes del Perreo is an opportunity to introduce international audiences to some of their older songs which, because they were released prior to the genre’s boom in 2004, never entered massive rotation in the U.S or abroad. “ The song “El Palo” really put us on the map locally, but it was never really heard outside of Puerto Rico,” Fido says. “It was an anthem here, but back then, there was no budget to really promote and export the single. This is a chance for our fans to enjoy our classic material.”

Los Reyes del Perreo is indeed a fitting title given the duo’s well-deserved reputation for pioneering risqué songs filled with sexual double entendres. These comical but naughty songs about club hoppin’ and bed hoppin’ became the foundation for the popular, highly sensual perreo dance that is often linked to reggaetón. “We really popularized club songs addressed to women,” Fido says. “Nowadays, you hear so many songs talking about mami, this” and “papi, that,” and we were and continue to be the duo best known for producing that kind of material. “Fido says.

Always seeking to innovate, Alexis y Fido decided to remix some of their older hits, adding fresh new rhythms that will speak to the current reggaetón landscape. And, instead of resting on their laurels, they opted to include five new tracks featuring a “who’s who” of producers — from Urba y Monserrate, known for their extensive work
with Daddy Yankee, to the hip-hop oriented beatmaker Mecca and the latest sensation in reggaetón production, Danny Fornari. “We decided to use those three different producers because we wanted to give the album different textures, different colors, even in the five new tracks,” Alexis says.

The kaleidoscopic effects are indeed impressive. The album’s lead single, the Mecca-produced “Me Quiere Besar” is already gaining some heavy buzz thanks to its Dirty South, bounce-laden rap undertones. And as always, the song has a strong, cohesive storyline. “It’s about noticing that look in someone’s eyes when they want to kiss you,” Alexis explains. “In the song, I pick up on all those signs, and I’m basically daring this woman to go ahead and kiss me,” he says with a laugh. Other singles include the Danny Fornari-produced “La Llamada,” the amorous “Dulce,” featuring up-and-coming duo Arcangel y De La Ghetto, and “Descontrol,” featuring Omega y Anthony, the first act signed to Alexis y Fidos’ six-month-old record company Wild Dogs.

Lyrically, Alexis y Fido continue to weave nuanced stories filled with mischievous details, but they acknowledge an evolution in their methodology. “Before, when we put out songs like “Dale un Nalgazo,” our lyrics were more explicit,” Alexis notes. “Now, we look at the audience when we perform and we notice kids and older folks in there, so we’re taking that into account when we write. We’ll always have those double entendres, but now it’s subtler, almost subliminal. Only older listeners who really pay attention will be able to pick up on those references.”

“But we’re always gonna have those picaresque elements where people are like, ‘How do these guys come up with this?’” Fido adds. “That’s what makes us Alexis y Fido!”

And it’s what keeps those in-the-know coming back for more. After ruling the charts, “Eso Ehhh” will be featured on an upcoming episode of HBO’s hit undercover police series The Wire, now in its fourth season. Alexis y Fido will also make a cameo appearance in the feature film Reggaetón, performing “Eso Ehhh” on camera. The film, developed by Jennifer Lopez and her Nuyorican Productions stars Giancarlo Esposito, Raising Victor Vargas’ Victor Rasuk and Melonie Diaz, and R&B singer Omarion and is scheduled for a 2007 release.

After years of barking on wax, Alexis y Fido are finally taking a bite out of the music and film industries and proving why they’re the Best in Show.
