Hip-hop is
an art form that has long been connected to the urban
landscape of our great nation. The pulsating rhythms and
raw lyricism speaks to people of all ages and
nationalities. Artist like Nas, Tupac Shakur, Dead Prez,
and The Roots have served as muses to the African
American experience. Enter Cruz, a Dominican American
artist with lyricism and a mic presence that rivals his
contemporaries.
Born and raised in the Washington Heights section of
Manhattan Cruz began his musical journey listening to
his father’s records which included merengue, salsa and
bachata. Weekend parties introduced Cruz to the rich
Caribbean musical tradition. The neighborhood introduced
Cruz to the genre that would become his life’s calling,
Hip-hop. Cruz recalls the first time he heard hip-hop on
the radio, “I was listening to 98.7 Kiss on a Friday in
the late 80’s and Red Alert came on with Slick Rick’s
Children’s Story since that day I’ve been hooked.” Cruz
learned about his talent at the age of 16 during a
cipher in a neighborhood park. Cruz states “I remember
just going off the top and getting the same reaction
from the crowd as some of the other mc’s that were
spitting written rhymes. ” Cruz’s raw talent as a
freestyle rapper was evident before he even put the pen
to paper. He creates clever punches and metaphors at the
drop of a dime, making him not only an inspirational
writer but also a battle ready mc.
Cruz’ musical influences include: Nas, Rakim, Big Pun,
Vico C., Willie Colon and Juan Luis Guerra. Using these
influences Cruz takes raw urban hip hop and blends it
with his Latin Caribbean roots. He uses his unique blend
to paint vivid pictures of the Latin American
experience. An experience that is best portrayed in the
language spoken by the people that live it. Cruz mixes
both English and Spanish seamlessly, manipulating both
languages and using them to catch the ears of his
audience. His flawless flow, delivery, distinctive voice
and his ability to adapt to any beat, makes Cruz a force
to be reckoned with. Add that to the fact that he can do
it in either language, and you have a marketing dream.
Sky’s the limit for this Latin artist!
